He was in office from 1809 to 1817.James Madison tried to defend the republican form of government in federalist papers while the critics were saying that it was not easy to govern the country with federal government. In the papers he explained about the majority rule vs. minority rights. He argued that diversity of people and groups would prevent tyranny as people would have to negotiate before arriving at solutions which would respect the right of minorities. He also argued that large size of the country would make it impossible to gain control over others.
