Explanation:

The term cotyledon is derived from Latin meaning seed leaf. As the germination of a seed occurs during the favorable conditions the first appearing structures are these cotyledons. Different flowering plant species have either one or two cotyledons and are respectively called as monocots and dicots. Cotyledons contain fats, lipids and carbohydrates in the stored form to provide nutrition to embryo.  These structures are occasionally photosynthetic and serve a similar purpose as leaves.
