Pyruvate and branched chain amino acids like valine, leucine, and isoleucine can be used to make alanine. Pyruvate is reductively aminated in two steps to yield alanine. Glutamate dehydrogenase converts -ketoglutarate, ammonia, and NADH into glutamate, NAD+, and water in the first step.
