Describe the intracellular events that occur when a population of wild type ( lac+) escherichia coliis transferred from a medium

The lac repressor protein is bound to the operator region of the lac operon when there is no lactose in the medium. When introduced in lactose, it binds to an allosteric site on the repressor causing its to change conformation and release from the operator. This allows the polymerase that is bound to the promoter region to proceed transcription of the lac operon genes (LacZ, Lac A, and Lac Y). Translation of these genes forms enzymes that enable the organism to break down lactose for energy.

1) the genes and chromosomes do not double after each generations because parental sex cells are haploid and only contain one set of chromosomes. During fertilization the two cells fuse to form a diploid zygote with two copies of genes and chromosomes. For example a normal human has 46 chromosomes (2 copies of 23 chromosomes) during reproduction gametes which contain 23 chromosomes (haploid) fuse to form an offspring with the correct number of chromosomes ( 23 + 23 = 46).

2) offspring only receive one set of chromosomes from each parent so to maintain the chromosome number of humans. If this did not happen you would not be the same species.

Recombination is the method by which organisms can randomly assort their genotypes amongst each other to create offspring with a different haplotype than either of its parents. This can be done by either copying sequences from one homologous chromosome to another (no physical exchange) or crossing over (physical exchange. 
Crossing over is a mechanism in eukaryotes by which recombination can occur, in which the two homologous chromosomes contributed by both parents literally cross over and break at certain points to exchange certain sections of the chromosomes amongst each together.
Self fertilizing organisms typically do not produce offspring that are genetically identical. However, this has an inbreeding effect on its offspring, since it is recombining from the same genotype and so has a higher chance of producing homozygous offspring. This is very detrimental for mammals and some eukaryotes, but in some other organisms such as bacteria, homozygosity is typically not an issue.
