According to the CDC, an estimated 48 million episodes of quantified infections occur per year in the United States, taking into account diseases caused by 31 transmitted pathogens  commonly for foods including viruses, parasites and bacteria.

These data are based on a study conducted for the year 2011, where it was found that 1 in 6 Americans get sick per year from these food infections.
