Ionic compounds have a strong force of attraction between the oppositely charged ions, so a lot of energy is needed in order to break the strong bonding force between those ions.

I think the correct answer would be the first option. As the hiker reaches the top of the mountain, the plastic bag would, most likely, expand. Thus, as the pressure decreases, the volume of the system would increase accordingly.
