An uncommon genetic mutation in the human population is in the gene that codes for glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, the enzyme

that catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step of the pentose phosphate pathway. Individuals that inherit this mutation are often protected against developing malaria. This is because they are unable to effectively remove reactive oxygen species (ROS, i.e., superoxide radical, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radical) and thus the protozoan (Plasmodium falciparum), which infects red blood cells causing malaria, is destroyed by ROS. Why would a mutation causing a defective or inactive glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase protect these individuals from malaria?

Answer: Because some mutations can exert selection pressure on some mutations, selecting them positively in order to perpetuate the species.

Explanation:

Malaria may have exerted selection pressure on the human genome, causing it to evolve by selecting those genes that provide this resistance to the Malaria disease, prevailing against the negative effect of the mutation itself. Therefore, this phenomenon is seen in populations where mutation of the gene that codes for glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase is common, for example in some african pupulations.

what are the advantages and disadvantages of using models to understand human impacts on earth's systems and the carbon cycle?
vredina [299]

Answer:

Models are used for understanding a process or phenomenon.

Explanation:

Advantages of using models:

1) It gives some information about the human impacts on earth's systems and carbon cycle.

2) It also helps in discovering the defects and errors.

Disadvantages of using models:

1) It did not fully explain the human impact on both earth and carbon cycle.

2) It is the simplified version not an actual version of the real situation of carbon cycle.

Which best illustrates how Gregor Mendel used creativity that lead to scientific discovery?O He noticed that traits were passed
Svet_ta [14]
As I know Gregor Mendel - Austrian naturalist, botanist and a religious leader, a monk, founder of the doctrine of heredity (Mendelism). By applying statistical methods for the analysis of results of the hybridization of pea varieties, formulated the laws of heredity. In 1856, Mendel began his experiments in crossing different varieties of peas, differing in a single, strictly defined criteria (for example, the shape and color of seeds). Precise quantitative account of all types of hybrids and statistical processing of the results of experiments that he conducted for 10 years, allowed him to formulate the basic laws of heredity - the splitting and combining of hereditary "factors". Mendel showed that these factors are separated and not crossing merge and disappear. Although the crossing of two organisms with contrasting features (for example, yellow or green seeds) in the next generation of hybrids appears only one of them.
