Answer:

J.J Thompson

Explanation:

J.J Thompson was responsible for cathod ray experiment to determine the presence of electrons. Cathod ray tubes are easily found around us example is the cathode ray television which was used before the coming of plasma TV. cathode rays usually deposit an electric charge this can be done experimentally by putting an electrometer at the opposite end from the cathode and anode. When the cathode rays hit the electrometer, it measured an electric charge. During the experiment, he found out that charges carried by the cathode are usually negative since they move towards the positive end and away from the negative end. Using electrostatic attraction law that like charges repel, unlike charges attract, he was able to deduce that cathode rays are negatively charged.

What is the pOH of 0.50 molar H3BO3?
Crazy boy [7]

<u>Answer:</u>

<em>A. 10.25</em>

<em></em>

<u>Explanation:</u>

Pkb =4.77

So pka = 14 - pka = 9.23

Ka =10^{-pka}

H_3 BO_3 (aq)+ H_2 O(l) H_2 BO_3^- (aq)+H_3 O^+ (aq)

Initial                0.50M                                 0                                 0

Change                  -x                                 +x                               +x

Equilibrium    0.50M-x                               +x                               +x

Ka =\frac {((x)(x))}{(0.50M-x)}

5.88\times10^{-10}= \frac {x^2}{(0.50M-x)}

(-x is neglected) so we get

5.88\times10^{-10}\times0.50=x^2\\\\x^2=2.94\times10^{-10}

x=\sqrt{x^2}=1.72\times10^{-5} M=H^3 O^{+}

pH=-log[H^3 O^+]\\\\pH=-log[1.72\times10^{-5}]\\\\pH=4.76

pOH = 14 - pH

= 14 - 4.76

pOH = 9.24 is the answer

Option A - 10.25 is the answer which is close to 9.24

Which substance is the oxidizing agent in this reaction? fe2o3+3co→2fe+3co2 express your answer as a chemical formula?
erma4kov [3.2K]
Equation is as follow,

                            Fe₂O₃  +  3 CO     →     2 Fe  +  3 CO₂

Oxidation:

                                        3 CO     →     3 CO₂

Oxidation state of C in CO is +2, and that in CO₂ is +4. So, carbon has lost 2 electrons per mole and 6 electrons per 3 moles hence,

                                 3 CO     →     3 CO₂  +  6 e⁻

Reduction:

                                    Fe₂O₃     →     2 Fe

Oxidation state of Fe in Fe₂O₃ is +3 per atom, and that in Fe is 0. So, Iron has gained 3 electrons per atom and 6 electrons per 2 atoms hence,

                                    Fe₂O₃  +  6e⁻     →     2 Fe

Result:
             Iron in Fe₂O₃ has been reduced in this reaction and has played a role of oxidizing agent by oxidizing carbon from +2 state to +4 state.
