Maria and Edwin have $23.00 each to spend at a book fair, where all students receive a 25% discount. They both want to purchase

a copy of the same book, which normally sells for $26.50 plus 10% sales tax. To check if she has enough to purchase the book, Maria takes 25% of $26.50 and subtracts that amount from the normal price. She takes 10% of the discounted selling price and adds it back to find the purchase amount. Edwin takes 75% of the normal purchase price and then computes 110% of the reduced price. Is Maria correct? Is Edwin correct? Do they have enough money to purchase the book? Explain your answer using complete sentences, and show your work.

The way Maria calculates the final price of the book is correct. We know that the book normally sells for $26.50 plus a 10% sales tax. We also know that the students will receive an additional 25% discount. We must understand that the sales tax is applied to the discounted price. So first we will calculate 25% of 26.50 and subtract it from that amount. So the price will then be: (26.50 - 6.625). The price is now $18.34. Then to calculate the tax, it will be (10% * 18.34), so 1.834. We add this amount to the discounted price so: (18.34+1.834) = 20.12.

The final price of the book is $20.12 and Maria can get it and still save a little money

They are both correct, the only difference is Maria did a two step process and Edwin did a one step process the total amount it would cost is $21.87 with $1.13 left over.

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Combine like terms. Like terms have same variable with same power

a) (2xy + 4x) + (15xy - 5x)  = 2xy + 15xy + 4x - 5x

                                         = 17xy - x

b) (6a + 4b² - 3) + (3b² - 5) = 6a + 4b² + 3b²  - 3 - 5

                                           = 6a + 7b² - 8

c) (4x³ - 3x² +4x) + (8x² - 5x ) = 4x³ - 3x² + 8x²  + 4x - 5x

                                               = 4x³  + 5x² - x

d) (7b - 6a  + 9y) - (12b + 5a - 2y) =

In subtraction, add the additive inverse of (12b + 5a - 2y)

additive inverse = - 12b  - 5a  + 2y

(7b - 6a  + 9y) - (12b + 5a - 2y) = 7b - 6a + 9y  -12b -5a + 2y

                                                   = 7b - 12b  -6a - 5a  + 9y + 2y

                                                   = -5b - 11a + 11y

e) (2x² + 7x - 2 + 9y) - (13x + 4x² + 5 - 6y)

Additive inverse of  13x + 4x² + 5 - 6y = -13x + 4x² - 5 + 6y

(2x² + 7x - 2 + 9y) - (13x + 4x² + 5 - 6y)= 2x² + 7x - 2 + 9y -13x - 4x² -5 +6y

                    = 2x² - 4x² + 7x -13x -2 - 5 + 9y + 6y

                    = -2x²  - 6x  - 7 + 15y

The height of a can is 3 times its radius. If the radius of the can is 3 centimeters, what is the volume?
Semmy [17]

Answer:

170 cent.^{3}

Step-by-step explanation:

If the height is 3 times the radius you can find that by: 3r

r = 3.

So: 3 x 3 = 9

The height is 9 centimeters

Volume of a cylinder (can):

V= 2\pi rh

Plug in what we know

V = 2 \pi (3) (9)\\V = 54\pi \\V = 169.646\\

Rounds to: 170

Find the number of distinct triangles with the measurements a = 5, b =2, and a = 51 degrees.
elixir [45]
The answer is the option b. 1.

Two sides and one angle determine one unique triangle.

If the angle is the between the two sides, you just can use the rule known as SAS, Side Angle Side.

When that is the case you use the cosine rule.

When the known angle is not between the two sides but one of the others, you use sine theorem.

Then in any case when you know two sides and one angle of a triangle the other side and angles are determined, which implies that there is only one possible triangle.
