Which hormone is secreted during periods of stress and is related to increased risk of disease?

Biology

Stress is a condition that tends to disturb the equilibrium of the individual with the environment. There are hormonal changes which occur during stress and have their impact in the endocrine system.

Reaction to stress is associated with increased hormone secretions of several hormones such as glucocorticoids, growth hormone, prolactin and catecholamine. The elevated levels of these hormones increase the risk of infections and also decrease the innate immunity as well as increase the autoimmune responses.

There are endocrine disorders related with the increased hormone secretion during stress conditions such as psychosexual dwarfism, obesity, Grave’s disease and gonadal dysfunction. The effect of increased secretion of the hormones is increase in mobilization of energy and adaption of the individual to current circumstances.

Activation of the pituitary adrenal axis is an important and dominant response due to stress. On stimulation of the pituitary adrenal axis results in hypothalamic secretion of the CRF (corticotrophin-releasing factor) which further stimulates the pituitary to ACTH, 3-endorphin and 8-lipotropin.

During stress, the plasma levels of these hormones increase up to five times.

The stimulation of the pituitary adrenal axis is also associated with the release of hormone catecholamine. The increased level of catecholamine leads to increased skeletal muscle flow of blood increased cardiac output and glucose levels, bronchiolar dilation, cutaneous vasoconstriction etc.

Acute stress releases vasopressin rapidly from the Para ventricular nucleus of hypothalamus together with corticotrophin releasing hormone.

During stress there is also suppression of gonadotropins and gonadal steroidal hormones which disrupt the normal menstrual cycle and prolonged stress can also lead to impairment of reproductive functions.

Thyroid functions are down regulated during stress conditions. T3 and T4 levels decrease whenever there is any stress condition.

The growth hormone level increases due to physical stress and prolactin level may increase or decrease depending on the conditions of regulatory environment locally.

11Alexandr11 [23.1K]

Answer:

C. More young children live in Country 1 than in the other countries.

Explanation:

The described graph shows that more young children live in Country 1 than in the other countries. This is clearly stated in the first paragraph: <em>This is the greatest percentage of any 4-year age span in all three countries.</em> This automatically means that options B and D are incorrect.

Option A is the second-best one. However, the fact that there are more young children in Country 1 doesn't necessarily mean that their death rate is lower. It could be, but correlation doesn't equal causation. There are more young children probably because the younger population is more present in that country and more children are born.

This is why option C is the correct one.

Which fluid-related hormone helps the body to lose fluids and reduce blood pressure?
Burka [1]

Answer:

Vasopressin

Explanation:

Vasopressin is an anti-diuretic hormone. Its main function is to control the osmolality and volume of body fluids, helping the body to lose fluids. The secretory neurons are activated as a result of increased osmotic pressure or reduced blood pressure, which is also reduced by this hormone. The release of this hormone has a potent vasoconstrictor effect, causing water retention to increase, acting as an antidiuretic hormone. The increased permeability of the collecting tubules and the thick ascending branches of the Henle loop, resulting from the exposure of aquaporins to the apical membrane, enables the diffusion of water found in the tubule cells to the medullary region of the kidney.

Which diagnostic test is used for the direct visualization of ligaments, menisci, and articular surfaces of joints?
Sati [7]

Arthroscopy is done for direct visualization of the ligaments, menisci, and articular surfaces of the joints.  Thus, option A is correct.

<h3>What is the role of ligament?</h3>

Ligaments are type of connective tissue which help to connect bones, joints and organs. It provide support internal parts of the body.

It is made of a band of connective tissue, collagenous fibre and spindle-shaped fibrocytes which is an elastic fibers.

Ligaments holds bones together, stabilize it, provide strength to joints etc.

By the use of Arthroscopy doctors can diagnose and treat the joint’s structural problems like any dysfunction. Hence, Option A is correct.
