Specialization is the fundamental property of the multicellular organism which is related to the complexity of the organism. The specialization can be exhibited by unicellular organisms like bacteria to form biofilms.
This specialization in the multicellular organism becomes permanent through the process of differentiation. Cells attain a particular function depending on the environment they are present as well as the signals from the adjacent cells. The cells work in cooperation and lose the ability to divide and reproduce after they get differentiated to perform a function.
