How do you turn a decimal to a fraction

Mathematics

Say you have a number like

12.34

That is, 12 and 34 hundredths. 0.34 is the same as 34/100, so

12.34 = 12 + 34/100 = 1200/100 + 34/100 = 1234/100 = 617/50

If you have a number with repeating digits in the decimal, like

12.343434... (with 34 repeating forever)

we can let x be this number. Then

100x = 1234.343434...

If we subtract x from 100x, we can eliminate the repeating decimal part:

100x - x = 1234.343434... - 12.343434...

99x = 1234 - 12

99x = 1222

Then solving for x gives the decimal as a fraction:

x = 1222/99

Solve for x & y solve x = 3 + yy = -2x + 9
sergey [27]

x = 3 + y Eqn(1)

y = -2x + 9 Eqn(2)

Let us solve the system of equations with the substitution method

x - 3 = y (Subtracting 3 from both sides of the Eqn(1))

Replacing y = x - 3 in Eqn (2), we have:

x - 3 = -2x + 9

x = -2x + 9 + 3 (Adding 3 to both sides of the equation)

x + 2x = 9 + 3 (Adding 2x to both sides of the equation)

3x = 12 ( Adding like terms)

x = 12/3 (Dividing by 3 on both sides of the equation)

x = 4

Replacing x=4 in Eqn(1), we have:

4 = 3 + y

4 - 3 = y (Subtracting 3 from both sides of the equation)

y=1

The answers are:

x= 4 and y=1
