In research, it was found that a small population in the wild has increased extinction chances because in a small population the breeding between close relatives takes place which is called inbreeding.
This inbreeding reduces reproductive success in the population and reduce the genetic diversity in the population. By inbreeding homozygosity chances increases which can result in increasing the amount of deleterious and recessive traits in offsprings that can result in the extinction of species.
