During the 1800s this was the presidents' greatest concern for economic development. In the 1900s, the US became involved in many external conflicts, and foreign policy was therefore a pertinent issue. At the end of the last century and beginning of this century social issues became more present. Issues such as diversity, respect for minorities and immigration have become very important to modern rulers, making them more involved in social issues than their predecessors.
