At first glance, fermentation of pyruvate to lactate appears to be an optional add-on reaction to glycolysis. After all, could c

ells growing in the absence of oxygen not simply discard pyruvate as a waste product? In the absence of fermentation, which products derived from glycolysis would accumulate in cells under anaerobic conditions? Could the metabolism of glucose via the glycolytic pathway continue in the absence of oxygen in cells that cannot carry out fermentation? Why or why not?

Answer:

No, glycolysis can not be continued without fermentation in the absence of oxygen.

Explanation:

In the absence of oxygen, cells perform fermentation to oxidize NADH into NAD+. NAD+ is required during the conversion of glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate into 1,3 bisphosphoglycerate. Fermentation reduces pyruvate and oxidizes NADH so that the NAD+ supply is continued to ensure continuity of glycolysis.

If fermentation does not occur under anaerobic conditions, cells will accumulate pyruvate and NADH. Glycolysis could not be continued in the absence of NAD+.

Why does dna contain thymine but rna contains uracil?
uysha [10]
Thymine is harder to make, but more stable. DNA needs to keep information safe for a long time, so it makes sense to use thymine. But RNA is made and used quickly, and small mistakes don’t matter as much, so the easier to make uracil does the job.

Explain why the number of red and yellow kernels on the ear of corn represents the results of cross that is observed
Grace [21]

Answer:

The red kernels are the dominant trait and will be more numerous on the ear of corn than the yellow. This happens because its dominance mearns that if it is a combination of either RR or Rr, it will still take over the r trait. The only time the yellow can be expressed entirely Is when the combination is rr.
