The main job of ethnographers is to explore and understand the cultural phenomenon that happen in one society. In order to obtain the full information,  ethnographers need to directly communicate with the local people. Since we cannot expect them to learn our language, it is much better if we as ethnographers learn their language instead.

If we research Colombus' relationship with the native peoples he met, we will come to the conclusion that he realized that these peoples would be perfect to be used as labor for the purposes of the Spanish crown in the Americas. For this reason, he did not wish to exterminate these peoples, but used them for the work that was being planned. He also found these people very naive and generous, in a way. However, he saw them as pagans, who were to be converted to Christianity.
