The primary succession takes place at the places where the soil is not capable of growing plants and trees.

It always occurs in the barren areas such as the sand dunes, lava erupted from volcanoes, retreating glaciers et cetera.

It takes many years by the pioneer species to convert the rock into soil taht can give rise to some plants.
