1. All genes are not "on" all the time. Using the metabolic needs of E. coli, explain why not. 2. What are the two main ways of

controlling metabolism in bacterial cells? 3. Feedback inhibition is a recurring mechanism throughout biological systems. In the case of E. coli regulating tryptophan synthesis, is it positive or negative inhibition? Explain your choice. 4. What is a promoter? 5. What is the operator? What does it do? 6. Answer:

Explanation:

1. All genes are not 'on' all the time. Using the metabolic needs of <em>E.coli, E.coli</em> regulate their gene expression to reserve resources when the environment is giving them what they need. <em>E.coli </em>feed on tryptophan, they produce it when tryptophan is low in the environment and they stop the production when it is abundant in their environment.

2. The two main ways of controlling metabolism in bacterial cells include;

  • to adjust the activity of present enzymes
  • to adjust production level of an enzyme

3. <em>E.coli</em> is negative inhibition because it involves an operon being switched off by active form of repression protein.

4. A promoter is a site where RNA polymerase can bind to DNA and begin transcription

5. The operator is the 'on switch' for gene replication. it is positioned within the promoter or between the promoter and enzyme coding genes. it controls the access of RNA polymerase to the genes.

6. An operon is the functioning unit of DNA containing a cluster of genes under the control of a single promoter.

Amino acid catabolism involves the breakdown of 20 amino acids all of which contain nitrogen but have different carbon skeletons
Alex Ar [27]

Answer:

The overall strategy employed in the catabolism of the carbon skeletons of the 20 amino acids is conversion to citric acid intermediates such as acetyl-CoA

Explanation:

The breakdown of the  different carbon skeletons of the 20 amino acids is strategically channelled  towards the citric acid cycle. Six major products are obtained in the catabolism of the carbon chain of amino acids and these products all enter the citrc acid cycle. The six major products are acetyl-CoA, α-ketoglutarate, succinyl-CoA, fumarate, oxaloacetate and pyruvate.

The amino acids that are broken down completely into acetoacetyl-CoA and/or acetyl-CoA are said to be ketogenic since they yield ketone bodies in the liver.

The amino acids that are broken down into α-ketoglutarate, succinyl-CoA, fumarate, oxaloacetate and pyruvate can be converted to glucose and glycogen and are said to be glucogenic. Pyruvate can further be converted to either acetyl-CoA or oxaloacetate. Some amino acids though are both ketogenic and glucogenic, e.g. tryptophan, threonine.

Define ecology and identify the two features of organisms that ecologists try to explain. Discuss examples of experiments that e
sleet_krkn [62]

Answer:

Ecology is defined as the scientific study of the complex interactions between organisms, and the environment of the earth. Ecologists study, and examine the features of biotic and abiotic factors of the environment.

Abiotic factors include non-living factors, the physical, and chemical attributes, for example light, water, temperature, and nutrients which helps to influence the abundance, and distribution of organisms.

Biotic factors include living factors, the other organisms which are part of a separate environment, similarly influence the abundance and distribution of life present on Earth.

A client reports sensing an unusual smell just prior to experiencing a tonic–clonic seizure. what term is used to describe this
jeka57 [31]
<span>This would be called an aura. An aura is simply some sort of disturbance that is experienced by people who have migraines or seizures. It is something they sense, see or smell prior to the headache or seizure beginning. Sometimes it is a strange light or a foul odor, sometimes it can even be confusing thoughts. Generally, those who experience auras will have the same aura each time.</span>

The ph of four different solutions are recorded below which solution is more acidic a.pH=3 b.pH=7 c.pH=10 d.pH=14
n200080 [17]
Solution a is the most acidic.

In a pH scale of 1 to 14, the smaller the pH is, the more acidic is. In opposite, the higher the pH is, the more alkaline it is. We call substances with pH below 7 as acid, and above 7 as alkali, while 7 as neutral.

Therefore, comparing the 4 solutions, solution a has the lowest pH, 3, so it is the most acidic.

Winding mills are made on hills. Why?
Leni [432]

Answer:

Winding mills are made on hills because of air flow and currents.

Explanation:

Winding mills capture wind to turn blades and produce energy. In order to do so, it needs winds! Strong winds, in order to turn the blades. You will notice that if you ever scale a mountain or go higher, it starts to become windier/the wind blows harder.

If the wind mills are placed higher, it can capture these windier conditions, thus moving the wind blades to produce energy. The higher the hill, the stronger the wind current, the more energy it produces.
