Jonas will escape from the community, leaving all his memories for the people of the community. Jonas begs the Giver to come with him, but the Giver explains that someone needs to stay to help the others deal with those memories, or the community will be thrown into utter chaos.
To a certain extent. I don't believe every person who claims to be a medium is telling the truth. I also don't believe the ones who can actually talk to those who have passed on can talk to anybody who has passed on. It would be hard to since some spirits are more self reserved or they wouldn't directly go and reach out to a medium.
