Gastric residual volumes are measured every 4- 6 hours during continuous feedings. Sometimes the measurement can range between 4 -8 hours. It usually measured before intermittent feedings.
Gastric residual volume refers to the fluid volume remaining in the stomach at a particular time during continuous feeding. It is done by using a feeding tube to withdraw fluid from the stomach. It is also advisable to replace the residual fluid back to the stomach of the patient to avoid nutrient and fluid loss.
