Teratogens are known to be the <u>environmental agents</u> which have the tendency of causing birth defects.

Any agent that has the ability to disturb the development of the fetus or the embryo  present in the environment is called teratogen. These may cause birth defects in the child or may even stop the pregnancy. There are different classes of this and these include chemicals, drugs, radiation, and maternal infections.

The study of the abnormal growth or development in fetus or embryo is called teratology. This causes congenital malformations or birth defects. Such abnormalities are found at birth and can be visible on the surface of the body.

 

Teratogen effect depends upon:

• Nature of teratogen.

• Duration of exposure.

• Genetic susceptibility of the mother.

• Heredity.
