The linear equation that represent this problem is

84+p=8p

Solve for p

Subtract p both sides

Divide by 7 both sides

p=12\ paintings

Check the solution

84+p=8p

substitute the value of p

84+12=8(12)

\$96=\$96 ----> is ok
