2(x + x + 2) = 3(x + 4 + x + 6) - 40
2(2x + 2) = 3(2x + 10) - 40
4x + 4 = 6x + 30 - 40

4x - 6x = -10 - 4
-2x = - 14
x = -14/-2
x = 7
