Emily Dickinson is considered one of America’s greatest poets, but few of her poems were published in her lifetime. Born in 1830

, Dickinson grew up in Amherst, Massachusetts, and attended school there and in nearby Holyoke. She was no doubt familiar with other popular New England writers of her day, especially Ralph Waldo Emerson. Dickinson had a fairly normal social life until she reached her mid-twenties, after which she rarely left the home she inherited from her parents. Instead, she may have been able to understand the world better by viewing it from a distance. With a sharp eye and keen intellect, she pondered nature, friendship, love, and death in poems of powerful simplicity. Only about seven of her poems were published during her lifetime, all without her consent. When she died in 1886, relatives found over 1,500 more of Dickinson’s poems, many of them written on napkins and slips of paper neatly tied up with ribbons. Answer:

c) Significance of Freedom.

Explanation:

In his autobiography "Long Walk to Freedom," Nelson Mandela recalls his life of being an African in South Africa fighting for equal rights. The book also details his suffering and that of his people for their freedom.

The given quote shows Mandela talking about freedom and how he began to know the significance of it for not only him, but everyone. He said, <em>"as a student, I wanted freedom only for myself, the transitory freedoms of being able to stay out at night, read what I pleased and go where I chose."</em> But that all changed when his definition of 'freedom' changed, his perception of being free changed. He knows the importance of freedom for his people and would begin to see it as his goal.

Thus, the correct answer is option c.

The above question is from the one-act play "Trifles" by Susan Glaspell. The story is about a killing and how the people try to find out who the culprit is. The theme that is best reinforced by the excerpt is option A: The thoughts and opinions of women were not considered noteworthy.

<h3>Theme in the one-act play "Trifles"</h3>

The above answer is explained in further detail as below:

  • In the excerpt, the women were wondering whether Mrs. Wright was going to quilt or just knot her sewing, but when the men heard them talking, they just made fun of their opinion.

  • This shows that they had no appreciation for the women and their roles and their thoughts were completely disregarded by the men as they didn’t consider them to be noteworthy.

Therefore, the correct answer is option A, that the men didn’t find the women’s opinions noteworthy.
