According to Karl Marx, the first step is for workers to become conscious that they share similar or common grievances against capitalists, and thus forming class consciousness and being aware of themselves as forming a social class that is in contrast to the bourgeoisie, and therefore becoming a class "for itself", also known as the proletariat.
