Compounds are made up of two or more elements which are chemically bonded. The elements and the properties of the compound are different. Exposure to light and chemical reaction can break compounds into elements. Compounds are only chemically separated not physically. The mass of elements determined the mass of the compound.

Which of the following is not characteristic of smooth muscle? A) The striations are due to the orderly arrangement of actin and
Tems11 [23]

Answer:

A) The striations are due to the orderly arrangement of actin and myosin

Explanation:

Smooth muscles are non-striated involuntary muscles which are found in the walls of stomach, urinary bladder, blood vessels...Smooth muscle tissue is composed of spindle-shaped muscle cells with single central nucleus. Like the other two type of muscles (cardiac and skeletal), smooth muscles also have four main functions:

  • Contractility-ability to contract. In the case of skeletal muscles it is voluntary, while in cardiac and smooth muscles it is unconscious.
  • Excitability-ability to change  membrane potential usually by the influence of nervous impulse.
  • Extensibility-the capacity to lengthen
  • Elasticity-ability to change its length and then return to previous.

Which carbohydrate is found in plant cell walls and is indigestible for mammals and other animals ?
Margarita [4]

The indigestible carbohydrates that are found in plant cell walls are called dietary fibers. Dietary fibers are group of complex carbohydrates that is found mostly in vegetables, fruits and legumes. They include beans, whole grains such as wheat, nuts etc. Dietary fibers cannot be digested in mammals because the body lacks digestive enzyme that is required to break them down.

A biologist subjects 200 plants to irradiation by X rays to induce mutations in the plants' genes. What should the biologist do
Anni [7]

Answer:

by phenotypically identifying plants unable (or with an altered ability) to synthesize auxins. This approach is called reverse genetics

Explanation:

Reverse genetics is a strategy widely used in molecular genetics aimed at analyzing the function of target genes by identifying defective phenotypes of one or more organisms following the disruption of the gene. In this case, a mutagenesis approach (i.e., irradiation with X-rays) was used to induce mutations in the gene/s involved in auxin production. Subsequently, the resulting mutant phenotypes, i.e., plants with an altered ability to synthesize auxin, can be used to reveal the biological function of individual (mutated) gene sequences.
