Postural drainage is clearance of the mucus from lungs to clear airway passage technique that helps the patients of the COPD or pneumonia and bronchiectasis and other lungs related problems.
Postural drainage utilizes the gravity force to remove the mucus to the throat from the lungs. In this process, the nurse asks the p[ateint to sit or lie so the desired lung segment to be clear is topmost on the body, during this process nurse could ask the patient to deep coughing and breathing that could help in the clearing the mucus from the airway passage.
Postural drainage is performed during lung diseases. It uses gravity to allow the mucus coming from the lungs may drained out from the throat. The best way is to make the patient sit so the maximum of the mucus drained out. The mucus will be drained from the uppermost part of the body.
The nurse should plan to increase the frequency of the catheterization. This is necessary in order to avoid spill over. Urine catheters come in different sizes and materials. The catheters should not be allowed to be totally full before it is empty.
