How did the flow of rivers effect the early history of Virginia?

The rivers were like the major highways of today because at that time there were not any paths wide enough for the travel of people or the supplies they needed. The rivers played a large part in the commerce and settlement of the interior of Virginia. Large ships couldn't go up the James but would dock where Richmond is now and the supplies would be traded to smaller boats going up-river.

Jamestown was situated on a site that was too secluded for agriculture, in fact, the entire island was isolated because it was swamp-like and infested with mosquitoes and the only water came from tidal rivers.
