The basketball boosters are selling school t-shirts for $20 and warm up pants for $45. Last week they sold 100 items and collect
lesya [120]

They sold 76 t-shirts and 24 warm up pants.

Step-by-step explanation:

Cost of one t-shirt = $20

Cost of warm up pants = $45

Total sold = 100

Worth of sold items = $2600

Let,

x be the number of t-shirts.

y be the number of warm up pants.

According to statement;

x+y=100    Eqn 1

20x+45y=2600   Eqn 2

Multiplying Eqn 1 by 20

20(x+y=100)\\20x+20y=2000\ \ \ Eqn\ 3

Subtracting Eqn 3 from Eqn 2

(20x+45y)-(20x+20y)=2600-2000\\20x+45y-20x-20y=600\\25y=600\\

Dividing both sides by 25

\frac{25y}{25}=\frac{600}{25}\\y=24\\

Putting y=24 in Eqn 1

x+24=100\\x=100-24\\x=76

They sold 76 t-shirts and 24 warm up pants.

If 2 sodas and 4 hamburgers are $12.00 and 4 sodas and 2 hamburgers are $9.00 how much is a single hamburger?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2s + 4h = 12, (1) 4s + 2h = 9. (2) Multiply (1) by 2. You will get 4s + 8h = 24, (1') 4s + 2h = 9. (2') Distract (2') from (1'). You will get 8h - 2h = 24 - 9, or 6h = 15 ---> h =  =  = 2.5. Thus one hamburger price is $2.50. Then from (1) s =  = 1. Answer. One hamburger price is $2.50 and 1 soda costs $1.00.
There is even more elegant way to solve the problem.
Simply add all hamburgers and all sodas. 6 hamburgers and 6 sodas. $12 + $9 = $21.
Hence, 1 hamburger + 1 soda =  = $3.50.
Having this, everybody can solve to the end in this way, actually, without equations and using the mental math only.
