The value that n must be in the organic compound is that it must be 5. This will result in the name of the hydrocarbon to be heptane as heptane possess 7 carbons in the longest parent chain. So the formula would be CH3(CH2)5CH3. Distributing the 5 inside and making it a subscript to the carbon gives us 5. Adding up all of the carbons together should give you the correct number of carbon atoms with respect to its name, heptane. 1+5+1= 7. so the answer is 5

Answer:

n=5

Explanation:

Hydrocarbons are named according to the number of carbons they possess in their structure.

So, write the structure given by the problem:

CH_{3}(CH_{2})_{n}CH_{3}

Then take in account that the prefix "hepta" indicates that the compound has 7 carbons in its structure and the ending "ane" indicates that it is an alkane, that is, it has only simple bonds between the carbon molecules in its structure.  Also each carbon can form 4 simple bonds, either with a carbon atom or with a hydrogen atom.

Therefore n=5, and the structure will be:

CH_{3}(CH_{2})_{5}CH_{3}

That is five times the CH_{2}. Or written in other way:

CH_{3}-CH_{2}-CH_{2}-CH_{2}-CH_{2}-CH_{2}-CH_{3}
