Encoding failure in terms of psychology is defined as a brain phenomenom in which the brains is not able to create a concrete memory link of information that when is needed to be recalled is not going to be precise or you brain is not going to be able to call back any information at all either in short or long term memory. In Nancy's case this is what happens, as she is daydreaming about her college plans she is not paying enough attention and as a result of that procedes the Encoding failure and then not being able to remember about ENIAC being the first functioning digital computer.
