In fact, in the Song era gunpowder came into use, both for military and pyrotechnic purposes.
The Song Dynasty was founded by Emperor Taizu, who had previously been a military commander. He took a very wise act upon coming to power - he gave a wealth of compensation to the members of the former imperial dynasty as well as to military commanders, thus somehow retiring them. With this he ensured peace and stability in the country.
The Song Dynasty gave a number of capable rulers, who managed to avoid deviations typical of imperial rule, such as decadent extravagance and cruelty. The Song dynasty lasted until the Mongols, descendants of the famous Genghis Khan, conquered China.
