An article in USA TODAY† describes a study of how young children learn. Sixty-four 18-month-old toddlers participated in the stu

dy. The toddlers were allowed to play in a lab equipped with toys, which also had a robot hidden behind a screen. The article states: "After allowing the infants play time, the team removed the screen and let the children see the robot. In some tests, an adult talked to the robot and played with it. In others the adult ignored the robot. After the adult left the room, the robot beeped and then turned its head to look at a toy to the side of the infant. In cases where the adult had played with the robot, the infant was four times more likely to follow the robot's gaze to the toy." Indicate whether the study is an observational study or an experiment. Give a brief explanation for your choice. (Hint: See Examples 1.2 and 1.3.) This is an observational study because the researchers observed how all the toddlers acted under the same conditions. This is an observational study because the researchers examined the toddlers observing adults and robots. This is an experiment because the researchers were using technological equipment, like robots. This is an experiment because the researchers assigned the toddlers to different experimental treatments.

Answer:

It's an observational study.

Explanation:

Because the study was focused on the reactions of the toddlers with the robot, the mainly thing on it was the behavior of them and reaction after the adult left the room; they used variants for them to compared and therefore has a more clear result.

a.one of the major problems with cohort studies is loss to follow-up. b.confounders are not a problem with cohort studies since
wlad13 [49]

Loss of follow-up is a problem in most cohort studies and often introduces bias. It is a situation in which a researcher loses contact with a subject, resulting in missing data. Too many subjects failing follow-up diminish the internal validity of the study.

What is follow-up loss in cohort studies?

 • Follow-up loss introduces bias (observed deviation of relevant measures from what would have been observed without bias) if there is a difference in the likelihood of loss due to follow-up related to exposure status and outcome.
 • In the clinical research trials industry, loss due to follow-up is defined as patients who were actively participating in a clinical research trial at some point but who lost themselves (due to errors in the computer tracking system or due to unavailability).
 • In cohort studies: 1) Imaging outcome, is loss of follow-up. 2) These are essentially prospective studies, so confounding factors are not an issue. 3) These studies help examine multiple outcomes from a single, infrequent exposure. 4) These are usually faster and cheaper than case-control studies.

What are advantage and disadvantages of cohort studies?

 • In general, the main advantage of cohort studies is the ability to study multiple exposures and multiple endpoints in a single cohort. This recording allows you to select index groups, so you can explore rare recordings.
 • A major weakness of cohort studies is that this type of study design can be time consuming and expensive for results that are rare or evolve over long periods of time. It's a question of research.
