You can use the Pythagorean Theorem (a<em>² + b² = c²</em>) to solve this problem.
<em>a</em> and <em>b</em> are the legs, while <em>c</em> is the hypotenuse, or the longest side. In this case, <em>x </em>and 7 are the legs, while 9 is the length of the hypotenuse.
<em>x² + 7² = 9²</em>
<em>x² + 49 = 81</em>
<em>x² = 32</em>
<em>x = √32</em>
