The skin refers to the largest organ of the body and is the most essential barrier against the infections. It is the first line of defense in safeguarding the internal tissues from the harmful germs. In case, when the skin gets damaged due to an injury, it becomes easier for the germs to get within the body and leads to infection.  

The skin can also get damaged due to cancer treatments like radiation therapy or surgery, and some other procedures like administering catheters, all these things can make it easy for the germs to get in. However, if the germs are able to cross through the first line of defense, the work of protecting the body from the infections get shifts to the immune system.
