It was <u>imported from India</u>, and it started being sold in Europe at the beginning of the seventeenth century. It was rather cheap, and people used it frequently in England. It was mostly used for the furniture and curtains but later was turned into the dresses for maids and servants.

The European textile makers could not get a hold on the process of making, so they were using profits as chintz was so widely popular. Therefore, the English Parliament forbade the import of chintz and usage of the material in 1720. The ban was lifted in 1759. when the mills of England and France started producing their chintz fabric.
