Below the scribes were the merchants and artisans. Below them were the peasants were the largest group, and lived in small adobe houses on the banks of the Nile River. Their lives were dedicated to agricultural tasks, being permanently monitored by the Pharaoh's officials.

The fruits of the crops obtained were divided into two parts: one for them, and another that was deposited in the pharaohs' warehouses to feed the royal officials.

Below them were the slaves.
