i mean a setting is a place so I guess a tree or nature?

He is in a forest/woods, and he is seeing the deer in the stream and the squirrel on a branch. So he'd be in a rural mid-western type of place that is cool enough to be having the smell of pine and wildlife out during the day so somewhere away from big cities.
