In 1793, France and Great Britain faced each other in war, with which the United States was affected, for being allies of the French but, at the same time, to have traded with Great Britain from the end of War of Independence.

This situation led to a growth in tensions between the United States and Great Britain, which began confiscating American ships and keeping their sailors prisoners.

This situation was resolved with the Jay Treaty of 1794, which in addition to preventing war between the two nations, gave way to a decade of peaceful trade in the midst of the convulsions produced in Europe as a result of the French Revolution.
