This property allows fish living in lakes and ponds to survive the winter. The ice that freezes on the surface insulates the water below so it stays warmer! In general, it is extremely unusual for the solid phase of a substance to be less dense than its liquid phase, but lucky for aquatic life it is!

The tropical plants remove carbon from the atmosphere. In a sense they are the only reason global warming hasn't taken over. We can use them to stablize the climate if we can keep them alive and not chop them all down. This is important  because the more trees we have the less the climate will change. If the climate keeps changing, the temperture will get hotter, species will die, and all the icecaps will melt
