Question 1(Multiple Choice Worth 4 points) (03.03 MC) When two nitrogen atoms bond together in N2, what type of covalent bond do

they form? A double bond, because they overlap orbitals to share two electrons. A double bond, because they overlap orbitals to share two pairs of electrons. A triple bond, because they overlap orbitals to share three electrons. A triple bond, because they overlap orbitals to share three pairs of electrons. Question 2(Multiple Choice Worth 4 points) (03.03 LC) What is true of a covalent bond? It is the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged particles. It is the sharing of electrons by overlapping orbitals. It involves the exchange of electrons from one atom to another. It involves the sharing of neutrons between two nuclei. Question 3 (True/False Worth 2 points) (03.03 LC) A triple covalent bond involves two atoms sharing three pairs of electrons. True False Question 4(Multiple Choice Worth 4 points) (03.03 MC) Two students made the Lewis dot diagrams of H2O. The diagrams are as shown. Two visual diagrams of an H two O molecule are shown. Student As diagram on the left has oxygen at the center and connects with two hydrogen atoms by way of straight lines. There are two pairs of dots above the oxygen atom. Student Bs diagram is identical except it has one pair of dots and instead of lines, and it has an arrow between the oxygen and each hydrogen. Which student drew the correct Lewis dot diagram? Only Student A Only Student B Both Student A and Student B Neither Student A nor Student B Question 5 (True/False Worth 2 points) (03.03 MC) The molecule CH2O contains two single bonds and one double bond. True False Question 6(Multiple Choice Worth 4 points) (03.03 MC) The table provides the number of valence electrons for each of the two atoms that form an ionic and a covalent compound. Composition of Compounds Compound C Compound D Atom 1 has seven Atom 2 has two Atom 1 has six Atom 2 has five Which of the following statements is true about one of the compounds? Compound C is ionic because both atoms are in need of electrons. Compound D is covalent because both atoms are in need of electrons. Compound D is ionic because one atom is in need of electrons and the other needs to lose electrons. Compound C is covalent because one atom is in need of electrons and the other needs to lose electrons.

1) Answer is: A triple bond, because they overlap orbitals to share three pairs of electrons.

Nitrogen (N) is in group 15 of Periodic table of elements and his atomic number is seven, which means that nitrogen has seven electrons and electron configuration: ₇N 1s²2s²2p³.

Nitrogen is inert (low reactivity) nonmetal and has five valence electrons. Nitrogen has oxidation numbers from -3 to +5.

Nitrogen molecule (N₂) has strong nonpolar triple covalent bond (:N:::N:), that is why it is very stable and have low reactivity.

In molecule of nitrogen (N₂), bond order is 3 , because there are three pair of electrons (6 electrons) between nitrogen atoms.

2) Answer is: It is the sharing of electrons by overlapping orbitals.

For example, in molecule of ammonia NH₃, three sp3 orbitals of nitrogen atom overlaps with 1s of three hydrogen atoms and form three sigma covalnt bonds.

Electron configuration for nitrogen: ₇N 1s² 2s² 2p³.

Electron configuration for hydrogen: ₁H 1s¹.

The central atom in ammonia, nitrogen, is sp3 hybridized (one s and three p-orbitals will combine for a four sp3 hybridized orbitals), because sp3 orbitals have lower energy.

3) Answer is: True.

Covalent bond is bond between nonmetals.

For example, molecule carbon monoxide CO has covalnet bond.

Carbon (C) and oxygen (O) are nonmetals.

Carbon atom and oxygen atom are connected by a triple bond (six shared electrons in three bonding molecular orbitals) that is formed of two covalent bonds and one dative covalent bond.

Dative covalent bond is formed by two electrons derive from the oxygen atom.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, toxic and tasteless gas.

4) Answer is: Only Student A.

When determining the best Lewis structure for a molecule, the structure is chosen such that the formal charge (FC) on each of the atoms is as close to zero as possible.

Formal charge (FC) estimates the distribution of electric charge in a molecule.

The formal charge of any atom in a molecule can be calculated with the equation: FC=V-N-B/2.

V is the number of valence electrons of the neutral atom in ground state.

N is the number of non-bonding valence electrons on atom in the molecule.

B is the total number of electrons shared in bonds with other atoms in the molecule.

Oxygen atom has two non-nonding pair of electrons and two valence electrons shared in bonds.

The bond bewteen oxygen anf hydrogen is poalr sigma covalent bond.

5) Answer is: True.

In chemical compound CH₂O there is two single bonds bonds between carbon atom and hydrogen atoms and one double bond between carbon atom and oxygen atom.

Both carbon and oxygen have sp2 hybridization in this carbonyl group.

Carbon has three sigma bonds with sp2 orbitals and oxygen has one sigma bond with sp2 and two free electron pairs with sp2 orbitals.

Pi bonds are formed between two p orbitals.

6) Answer is: Compound D is covalent because both atoms are in need of electrons.

Atom is most stable when it has full filled electron shell with electromns like closest noble gas.

Atoms in combound D need electrons, first atom two and second atom three electrons, to form stable electron configuration as closest noble gas, so they share electrons.

Compound C is probably ionic compound.

1) Atomic number of N = 7

Valence electron configuration = 2s²2p⁵

Thus when 2 N atoms combine, they share 3 pairs of electrons (i.e. 3 from each N atom) and form a triple bond

Ans D)

2) A covalent bond is formed by the sharing of electrons between by overlapping orbitals.

3) True

In general a covalent bond is formed when two atoms share a pair of electrons. Thus, 3 covalent bonds involve a mutual sharing of 3 pairs of electrons.

4) A Lewis dot structure is a representation of the electron arrangement around atoms in a molecule

A water molecule has 2 H atoms and 1 O atom

Each O atom is surrounded by 6 electrons such that a pair of electrons are involved in bonding with the 2 H atoms. This leaves the O atom with 2 lone pairs of electron

Student A has the correct lewis diagram

5) True

In HCHO, there is 1 double bond between C and O and 2 single bonds between C and H

6) In Compound D both atoms are in need of electrons which can be shared mutually.

Ans B) Compound D is covalent beacuse both atos are in need of electrons

I think the best answer is the last option. A scatter plot is the appropriate type of graph for the student to use to show the percent samples per group. This plot is somewhat similar to line graphs. However, they are use for a specific purpose which is to show the relationship between two parameters. In this case, the correlation between pH and the percent of samples.

Which of the following polyatomic ions will form an ionic compound with a single sodium ion?
vaieri [72.5K]

Answer:

Option B, HCO3 1-

Explanation:

The valence of Sodium ion is +1 and the valence of HCO3 is -1. Thus, sodium ion has an extra electron to be donated to complete its outer shell while HCO3 needs an electron to complete its outer shell

Hence Na will combine with HCO3 to form NaHCO3

Option B is correct

The scientist's results is that at a temperature of 35°C, the solubility of the substance in water is 146.2 grams in 200 grams of water. There isn't really a different method to determine the solubility of a substance in water. Another procedure could be that a lesser amount of the substance is used and the water required to dissolve it is determined. The solubility of the substance based on the two procedures can then be compared.
