(av + bu) miles

Explanation:

Average speed = distance/time

distance = time × average speed

distance from the starting point to the beginning of the opposite direction = a hours × v mph (mph is miles per hour) = av miles

distance from the opposite direction to the end = b hours × u mph = bu miles

distance from where he started to the end = (av + bu) miles
