What is lactose intolerance, and what causes it?

Lactose intolerance is the inability to easily digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and other dairy products.  Lactose intolerance is caused by insufficient production of the enzyme lactase, which is needed to digest lactose.

I know "lactase" looks wrong but it is the enzyme.
