Twice the sum of two numbers is 24. if one number is 2 times larger than the other, what is the smaller of the two numbers?
Vikki [24]
2(x+y)=24
2x=y

Use substitution. If y=2x, than we can substitute 2x for it in the other equation, because x and y equal the same things in both equations.

So using that we get 2(x+2x)=24

SIMPLIFY
2(3x)=24

DISTRIBUTE
6x=24.

DIVIDE: x=4.

If we substitute x into the original equations we get x=4 and y=8. Those are your two numbers.

Have a nice day! :)

A cable car starts off with n riders. The times between successive stops of the car are independent exponential random variables
nikitadnepr [17]

Answer:

The distribution is \frac{\lambda^{n}e^{- \lambda t}t^{n - 1}}{(n - 1)!}

Solution:

As per the question:

Total no. of riders = n

Now, suppose the T_{i} is the time between the departure of the rider i - 1 and i from the cable car.

where

T_{i} = independent exponential random variable whose rate is \lambda

The general form is given by:

T_{i} = \lambda e^{- lambda}

(a) Now, the time distribution of the last rider is given as the sum total of the time of each rider:

S_{n} = T_{1} + T_{2} + ........ + T_{n}

S_{n} = \sum_{i}^{n} T_{n}

Now, the sum of the exponential random variable with \lambda with rate \lambda is given by:

S_{n} = f(t:n, \lamda) = \frac{\lambda^{n}e^{- \lambda t}t^{n - 1}}{(n - 1)!}

Only like sedans: 25- 15 = 10

Only like hatchbacks: 40-15 = 25

Like both: 15

Like none of them: 100-10-25-15 = 50

Dislike sedans: 100 - 10-15 = 75

Dislike hatchbacks: 100-25-15 = 60

So dislikes: sedans>hatchbacks

Use the Distributive Property to write each expression as an equivalent algebraic expression. –9(–x + 5)
Anna11 [10]

Answer:

  9x -45

Step-by-step explanation:

The distributive property tells you the factor outside parentheses applies to each of the terms inside parentheses:

  -9(-x +5) = (-9)(-x) +(-9)(5)

  = 9x -45
