The problem has you solving 4x = 88 and the first step - which is the proper step - is to divide by 4 on both sides. What it does is the following:

--gets x alone on one side of the equation

--keeps the equation balanced because it's on both sides

--Undoes the multiplying. Dividing and multiplying are inverse, or, undoing operations. 4 and x are put together with multiplying - so we use dividing to take it apart.

The idea of using 4 because it's a factor is the wrong choice. If the equation were 5x = 88 and you divide by 4, you aren't getting a single 1x alone. So the "divide because it's a factor" choice is wrong.

Thus the upper left choice is NOT a good reason and is the best answer.

Dividing 4× by 4 isolates x on one side of the equation.

all they others is a good reason to divide by 4

hope it helps

Which polynomial represents twice the sum of -5x^2-x+6 and 7x^2+x-1?
elena-14-01-66 [18.8K]

The polynomial that represent twice the sum of -5x^{2} - x +6 and 7x^{2} + x -1 is : 4x^{2}+10

<h3>What is a polynomial?</h3>

A polynomial is any  algebraic expression that has the least value of the power of  its variable as 2.

When the highest value of the polynomial is 2, it is a called a quadratic expression.

Analysis:

2( -5x^{2} -x +6 + 7x^{2} +x -1)

2( 2x^{2} + 5) =

4x^{2} + 10

In conclusion, the polynomial that represents the above  expressions is 4x^{2} + 10
