The split in the Democratic- Republican Party was a result of the 1824 presidential election , called by historians "the ugly election."  John Quincy Adams got reelected but Andrew Jackson denounced this as the outcome of a corrupt political agreement. Jackson ran again in 1828 with the Democratic ticket.
