On a movie set, an archway is modeled by the equation y = -0.5x2 + 3x, where y is the height in feet and x is the horizontal dis

tance in feet. A laser is directed at the archway at an angle modeled by the equation -0.5x + 2.42y = 7.65 such that the beam crosses the archway at points A and B. At what height from the ground are the points A and B?

This question really just needs you to solve the system of equations.  These solutions will be the two points when the curve (archway) and the line (laser) intersect.

Let us express the laser line in terms of y.

-.5x+2.42y=7.65

2.42y=.5x+7.65

y=(.5x+7.65)/2.42

The curve is just y=-.5x^2+3x so when it intersects the curve, y=y and x=x so  we can say:

(.5x+7.65)/2.42=-.5x^2+3x

.5x+7.65=-1.21x^2+7.26x

1.21x^2-6.76x+7.65=0  using the quadratic for simplicity and solving for x:

x=(6.76±√8.6716)/2.42

x≈1.577, 4.010  (to nearest thousandth)

So the heights can found using the simple linear equation y=(.5x+7.65)/2.42 with those values of x...

y≈3.49, 3.99

Part A) Y cannot be described as a function of x, because in order to be a function, there can only be one input, the x value, for every output, f(x) or the y value. Since the x value, 16, generates two y values, -2 and 2, this cannot be called a function.

Part B)
<span>f(x) = 25x + 16
f(20)= 25(20) + 16
f(20) = 500 + 16
f(20) = 516

In 2012 your car was worth $10,000. In 2014 your car was worth $8,850. Suppose the value of your car decreased at a constant rat
monitta

Answer:

The function to determine the value of your car (in dollars) in terms of the number of years t since 2012 is:

f(t) = 10000(0.9407)^t

Step-by-step explanation:

Value of the car:

Constant rate of change, so the value of the car in t years after 2012 is given by:

f(t) = f(0)(1-r)^t

In which f(0) is the initial value and r is the decay rate, as a decimal.

In 2012 your car was worth $10,000.

This means that f(0) = 10000, thus:

f(t) = 10000(1-r)^t

2014 your car was worth $8,850.

2014 - 2012 = 2, so:

f(2) = 8850

We use this to find 1 - r.

f(t) = 10000(1-r)^t

8850 = 10000(1-r)^2

(1-r)^2 = \frac{8850}{10000}

(1-r)^2 = 0.885

\sqrt{(1-r)^2} = \sqrt{0.885}

1 - r = 0.9407

Thus

f(t) = 10000(1-r)^t

f(t) = 10000(0.9407)^t

11 centimeters
This is because a rectangle has an area of length times width and so you can divide 88 by 8 to get 11
