Answer: Decreased amounts of <u><em>GABA</em></u> and <u>Glutamate</u> are both considered to be contributing factors in cognitive impairments of people suffering from schizophrenia. There are numerous studies that show normal brain function can occur with a GABA and Glutamate balance. Patients are given atypical antipsychotics to help with the cognitive impairments.
