Armed groups were rumored to be marching toward the capital, prompting President Grant to order increased military readiness.

The result was the end of the Reconstruction period when the last vestiges of the federal occupation of the southern states since the end of the Civil War disappeared. At the time of the Compromise, only federal troops remained in Louisiana, South Carolina and Florida. When the troops withdrew, many white Republicans, so-called scalawags, also left the South.
