-2 = a(1 - 2)^2 - 4

-2 = a(-1)^2 - 4
-2 = a - 4

Add 4 to both sides to solve for “a”

-2 + 4 = a - 4 + 4
2 = a

Now that we have the value of a = 2, we can establish our quadratic function in vertex form:

f(x) = 2(x - 2)^2 - 4
